Mold Testing and Identification: When You Need It and When You Don't
If color can't tell you how dangerous mold is, what can? The answer is less about lab results than most people expect.
Once you accept that mold color doesn't tell you how dangerous it is, the obvious next question follows: what does? Most people assume the answer is testing — send a sample to a lab, get a species name back, and act accordingly.
It's a reasonable assumption, and it's mostly wrong. Testing has real uses, but identifying your risk isn't the main one. This article covers what each method actually measures, where the honest limits sit, and the specific situations where paying for a test is money well spent.
The EPA's position on sampling is blunter than most people expect: if visible mold growth is present, sampling is usually unnecessary. You already have the finding that matters. The mold needs removing and the moisture source needs fixing, and no laboratory result changes either of those obligations. Spending several hundred dollars to learn the genus of something you can already see is, in most cases, buying an answer to the wrong question.
Why You Can't Identify Mold By Looking At It
Visual identification fails for the same reason color does — appearance is shaped by substrate, moisture, colony age, and light, not by species alone. Two colonies that look identical can be unrelated organisms with completely different behavior.
Genuine identification requires microscopy: examining spore structure, hyphal morphology, and reproductive features at magnification, usually after culturing a sample. That is laboratory work, not something a technician does by squinting at a seat cushion — and anyone who tells you they can name the species on sight is telling you something about their sales process rather than their expertise. The Three Sampling Methods That Actually Work
When testing is warranted, these are the methods a qualified assessor uses. Each answers a different question, and none of them answers all of them.
The Problem With DIY Test Kits
The kits sold in hardware stores are usually settle plates — a petri dish of growth medium left open in a room for a day or two, then sealed and either read at home or mailed to a lab.
They will grow something. That is the problem. Mold spores are present in virtually all indoor air at all times, so a settle plate left open anywhere on earth produces colonies. A positive result confirms only that you live on this planet. Because no measured volume of air passes over the dish, the result cannot be converted into a concentration, cannot be compared to an outdoor control, and cannot be compared to any threshold — and as the EPA notes, no federal standards or threshold limits exist for airborne mold in the first place.
The real expense isn't the twenty dollars. It's the two outcomes it produces: false reassurance from a sparse plate, when growth is sitting under the carpet where no spore was ever going to settle on a dish — or unnecessary alarm from a crowded one, which is the normal result. Neither tells you anything actionable, and both delay the thing that actually matters.
What a Lab Result Does and Doesn't Tell You
Suppose you do it properly — qualified assessor, calibrated equipment, accredited lab — and a species name comes back. That result is real information. It is also narrower than it looks.
A species name doesn't measure your exposure. Health effects depend on how much you are exposed to, for how long, and how sensitive you personally are. A confirmed Stachybotrys result on a stamp-sized patch in a garage is a different proposition from a common allergenic species throughout a car you drive two hours a day.
And a species name doesn't change the remediation. Whatever comes back, the work is the same: find and repair the water source, remove contaminated porous material, extract, treat, purge the ventilation system, and verify. The plan is driven by the extent of contamination and the moisture behind it — not by the name on the report. This is why an operator who leads with testing rather than moisture diagnosis is often selling the wrong service.
When Testing Is Worth Paying For
There are genuine cases. In each of these, the test answers a question that isn't "is there mold" — which is the reason it earns its cost.

- Post-remediation verification. Confirming the work succeeded before you pay for it or re-occupy the vehicle. This is a defined step under the ANSI/IICRC S520 standard — published by the IICRC — not an optional extra.
- Symptoms with no visible source. When someone is reacting and nothing can be found, air sampling can confirm or rule out a hidden reservoir — often behind a panel or under carpet.
- A medically vulnerable occupant. Where a passenger is immunocompromised or has severe asthma, the threshold for wanting hard data is legitimately lower.
- Before buying a vehicle with known flood history or an unexplained musty smell, where the seller's account and the car's condition don't match.
One thing to insist on in every case: the party doing the testing should not be the party doing the remediation. Independent assessment exists precisely because a company that both finds the problem and sells the cure has an obvious incentive problem. Reputable remediators are comfortable with this and will say so.
What a Professional Vehicle Assessment Involves Instead
A proper assessment spends its time on the things that determine the scope of work — almost none of which require a lab.
Moisture mapping to find where water is entering and where it has travelled. Inspection of the known hotspots — beneath carpet and padding, inside door cavities, around the HVAC evaporator, in the spare wheel well. Assessment of how deeply porous materials are contaminated, which determines what can be treated and what must be removed. Evaluation of whether the ventilation system has been colonized, since that determines whether a full purge is needed. And a plan for verification once the work is complete — which matters because dead spores remain harmful, so "killed it" is not the finish line.
